Augustus and January are long time college rivals, now published successful authors, who happen to be neighbours. While they both have hit a rut in their writing career, they decide to switch things up by writing books of the other’s genre. January has to write a serious dark novel and Gus has to write a romance happy ending.
The plot is quite simple, and though laced with heavy back stories, it’s still a feather light read. That’s probably what makes the book enjoyable- it’s a plain rivals to lovers story without any added drama. Both Gus and January are beautifully crafted goofy characters, that I immediately took a liking towards. Their banter is funny and witty, and both characters are constantly taking digs at one another while simultaneously developing feelings for each other. The arc of those feelings is so natural and realistic, it gives you the ‘butterflies-in-your-tummy’ via proxy.
Emily Henry is an astounding writer. I would go so far as to compare her writing style to that of Colleen Hoover. She’s a magician with words – spinning together analogies and sentences that are so smart, it shocked me! The plot isn’t as heavy as a Coho novel, you will not cry/ weep for weeks; but I enjoyed the experience of reading a well written book with a cute story. Needless to say, I will now spend the next few weeks devouring more of Emily Henry!!
